Has your scissor lift suddenly stopped and displayed an "18 alarm fault" on the panel? This is one of the most common alarms our service team sees on Sino Lift self-propelled scissor lifts. In most cases, the cause is minor and can be resolved in just a few minutes with no special tools required.

What Does the 18 Alarm Fault Mean?

The 18 alarm fault is a safety-triggered error on Sino Lift self-propelled scissor lifts. It activates when the safety system detects one of the following five conditions that prevent the platform from operating safely:

  1. Foreign object under the flip plate
  2. Pit protection switch is stuck
  3. Rusty or corroded screws on the flip plate
  4. Damaged gas spring or pit protection switch
  5. Foreign object stuck on the pressure bar

Step-by-Step: How to Diagnose and Fix the 18 Alarm Fault

Step 1: Check the Flip Plate for Foreign Objects

Step 1: Inspect the flip plate underneath the scissor lift for debris or obstructions

Lower the platform to ground level first. Visually inspect the flip plate area underneath the device. Small stones, debris, or loose wire can trigger the 18 alarm.

Recommended fix: Remove any foreign objects from the bottom of the flip plate. Restart the device and resume operation.

Step 2: Inspect the Pit Protection Switch

Step 2: Open the bottom drawer to check the pit protection switch for obstruction

Open the bottom drawer of the device and check whether the pit protection switch is stuck by foreign objects. This is one of the most common causes of the 18 alarm fault reported by our service team.

Recommended fix: Clean any foreign material around the switch. Close the drawer and restart the device.

Step 3: Check the Flip Plate Screws for Rust

Step 3: Inspect the flip plate screws for rust and apply rust remover if needed

Rusty or corroded screws on the flip plate can cause intermittent sensor contact, which may trigger the 18 alarm.

Recommended fix: Apply a rust remover spray to the affected screws. Allow it to penetrate for 15 minutes. Test the device to confirm normal operation.

Step 4: Inspect the Gas Spring and Pit Switch for Damage

Step 4: Check the gas spring and pit protection switch for visible damage

A damaged gas spring or pit protection switch can trigger the 18 alarm repeatedly. Visible damage typically requires component replacement.

Recommended fix: If visible damage is found, replace the gas spring or pit switch. Genuine Sino Lift replacement parts can be ordered through our parts team.

Step 5: Check the Pressure Bar for Obstructions

Step 5: Inspect the pressure bar for any stuck foreign objects

The pressure bar at the base of the unit can also become stuck with debris, especially in outdoor or construction environments.

Recommended fix: Clear any foreign objects from the pressure bar. Restart the device.

When the 5 Steps Do Not Resolve the Issue

If the 18 alarm fault persists after completing all 5 steps above, the issue may be related to the control board or electrical system, which requires professional diagnosis.

How to Prevent the 18 Alarm Fault

Based on our service records, regular maintenance significantly reduces the chance of the 18 alarm fault occurring. We recommend the following inspection schedule:

  • Before each shift: Visually inspect the flip plate and pressure bar for debris
  • Weekly: Clean the area around the pit protection switch
  • Monthly: Check the flip plate screws and apply rust inhibitor if needed
  • Quarterly: Inspect the gas spring and pressure bar for wear; replace if needed

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 18 alarm fault mean on a Sino Lift scissor lift?

The 18 alarm fault is a safety-triggered error that activates when the system detects an unsafe condition, most commonly an obstruction or sensor issue. It is designed to prevent the lift from operating until the cause is resolved.

Can I reset the 18 alarm fault by myself?

Yes, in most cases. Lower the platform to ground level first, then identify and clear the cause as described in the 5-step guide above. After addressing the cause, restart the device.

What if the 18 alarm keeps coming back?

If the 18 alarm fault reappears after clearing the immediate cause, the underlying component (gas spring or pit switch) may be worn and require replacement. Contact Sino Lift's technical support for parts ordering and replacement guidance.

Is the 18 alarm fault covered under warranty?

Warranty coverage depends on the specific cause and your purchase terms. Manufacturing defects are typically covered. Damage caused by lack of maintenance or unauthorized modification is generally not covered. Contact the Sino Lift service team for warranty assessment.
